How is the MICR Code Structured?

The MICR code is divided into three segments, each with specific information about the branch and its location: 

First 3 Digits (City Code):  

The first three digits represent the city where the bank branch is located. These digits usually correspond to the city’s postal code, ensuring geographic clarity. For instance, if the MICR code starts with "110," it indicates that the branch is in Delhi. 

Next 3 Digits (Bank Code):  

The next set of three digits is unique to the bank branch within that city. This part of the code identifies the particular bank involved in the transaction. 

Last 3 Digits (Branch Code): 

The final three digits denote the specific branch of the bank. This ensures that the transaction is routed accurately, even within the same city.

For example, a complete MICR code might look like this: 110229003. In this case, "110" represents Delhi, "229" identifies the bank, and "003" is the branch code. Each bank branch in India has a unique MICR code that sets it apart from other branches, even if they belong to the same bank.

Where Can You Find the MICR Code?

The MICR code is most commonly found at the bottom of a cheque, printed in a special font using magnetic ink. This ink allows machines to quickly scan and recognize the code during the cheque clearing process. In addition to cheques, the MICR code is also mentioned in your bank passbook and can be found on the bank’s official website or mobile banking app under branch details.

On the other hand, the IFSC code (Indian Financial System Code) is used for electronic fund transfers, such as NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS, facilitating quick and secure digital transactions.
