Virtual Payment Address (VPA)

11th Nov 2025...

What is a Virtual Payment Address (VPA)?

A Virtual Payment Address or VPA is a digital identifier linked to your bank account. It’s a unique, easy-to-remember identifier that eliminates the hassle of sharing traditional bank details like account numbers and IFSC codes. So, with a VPA, making and receiving payments becomes as simple as sharing a name, ensuring both security and convenience in every transaction.

VPA Example

A typical VPA format resembles an email address: username@bankname. For instance, your VPA could be johndoe@kotak, where ‘johndoe’ is the unique identifier chosen by the user, and ‘kotak’ is the bank's UPI handle.

How does VPA work?

For instance, if you're paying a friend, you can simply enter their VPA in your UPI app, confirm the amount, and send it—viz. Initiate a transaction. Once initiated, the UPI system routes the payment request to the corresponding bank account linked with that VPA. The transaction is processed in real-time, ensuring quick and seamless fund transfers.

Since the VPA doesn't reveal your bank details, it adds more security to the transaction.

Benefits of using a Virtual Payment Address

For one, with a VPA, you can easily remember and share your payment address, making transactions quicker and simpler. Some additional benefits include:

  • Security: VPA transactions eliminate the need to share sensitive bank details, reducing the risk of fraud.
  • Flexibility: Multiple VPAs can be created and linked to one account, allowing for different addresses for different purposes, such as personal or business transactions.
  • Instant Payments: UPI transactions using VPA are processed instantly, providing real-time access to funds.

VPA vs. UPI

It’s easy to mix up VPAs with UPI, but here’s the distinction: UPI is the broader digital payments framework, while VPA is like your personal handle within that system, similar to how your email address fits into the larger internet. In essence, UPI is the highway, and your VPA is the specific address where payments arrive.

How to Create and Use a VPA

Creating a VPA is straightforward and can be done through any UPI-enabled banking app:

  1. Open your UPI app: Download and open your preferred UPI app from a bank or a third-party provider.
  2. Link your bank account: Enter your bank details to link your account to the app.
  3. Create a VPA: Choose a unique VPA (e.g., yourname@upi) and link it to your bank account.

Once registered, you can use your VPA to send or receive money by entering it in the transaction field.
