Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is a government-backed, low-cost accident insurance scheme designed to give basic financial protection to people who may not have access to regular commercial accident policies. It aims to reduce the financial shock to families if the account holder suffers accidental death or disability. The PMSBY scheme details are implemented through participating banks, post offices and insurance companies.

What is Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)

PMSBY is a one-year, renewable personal accident insurance scheme. On payment of a small annual premium, the subscriber receives specified lump-sum payouts in the event of accidental death, total permanent disability or partial permanent disability.

PMSBY gives low-cost accident insurance to anyone with a bank or post-office account. If an accident leads to death or disability, the scheme provides a fixed payout to support the person or their family.

Who Does PMSBY Benefit

PMSBY benefits people by offering financial help if an accident causes death or serious disability. The nominee gets ₹2 lakh if the subscriber passes away due to an accident. They can also receive ₹2 lakh if the accident leads to a permanent disability that stops them from using key parts of their body. For less severe but still permanent disabilities, the payout is ₹1 lakh. The scheme mainly helps low and middle-income individuals with savings accounts, along with both rural and urban depositors who may not have separate accident insurance.
